Video: Man waving meat cleavers at police in Richmond Walmart

Video shows suspect apparently waving two meat cleavers at police officers at the seafood counter

A man who wielded “edged weapons” has been arrested in a police incident at Wal-Mart this afternoon.

Cpl. Dennis Hwang with the Richmond RCMP said a male suspect was arrested and is now in custody.

“He barricaded himself inside the store with edged weapons,” said Hwang, adding that the store had to be evacuated with the surrounding area cordoned off.

“We contacted the Emergency Response Team, police dog services as well as a crisis negotiator.”

A video posted by Twitter user PhilQ appears to show the suspect wielding a pair of meat cleavers in front of police officers at the seafood counter.

Hwang added that luckily the individual surrendered in the end and no one was injured during this incident.

In a video taken by a Richmond News reader, police were seen running up the escalator with one officer carrying what appears to be a rifle.

In another video taken inside by Marion Laramie, officers can be seen surrounding the man in the seafood and meat section.

Laramie, who was in the store with her daughter and grandchildren at the time, shot the video from the second floor.

Heavy police presence with multiple vehicles was seen at the Richmond Wal-Mart and dozens of people could be seen standing outside in the parking lot this afternoon.

Motorists were advised to avoid the area.

According to a Twitter post by the Richmond RCMP, Alderbridge Way and Garden City Road will re-open shortly.
