Richmond RCMP are reminding residents to not leave personal belongings, especially garage door openers, in their cars after an increase of recent break and enters to residential garages.

Between July and September, there have been 15 break and enter incidents where garage door openers have been stolen from cars and used to gain entry to the garages and homes in Richmond, according to the Richmond RCMP.

“We are out there actively investigating and working to arrest those committing these crimes,” said Sgt. Simon Lee, Non-Commissioned Officer in-charge of the Targeted Enforcement Units.

“But we need the public’s help. Not only as additional eyes and ears, but by removing items, such as credit cards or garage door openers, those make your vehicle a tempting target.”

Tips to prevent vehicle break and enters include:

  • Lock your car and garage doors. Thieves will try car or garage doors looking for ones that have been unlocked.
  • Do not leave any property in your vehicle including coins or a cigarette lighter.
  • Do not leave any personal identification in an unattended vehicle.
  • Do not keep your garage door opener in your vehicle.

The public is asked to report suspicious persons or activities near a vehicle to police.

Those who have witnessed or have information about thefts are asked to call the Richmond RCMP at 604-278-1212 or anonymously at 1-800-222-8477.
