Sewers, traffic, flood management and active transportation are the topics on Tuesday afternoon’s agenda for the public works committee at Richmond City Hall.

Various recommendations for action in these areas will be dealt with by the committee today.

The Traffic Safety Advisory Committee is bringing forward initiatives for 2020 including looking at school zone safety, reducing speeding, road safety at Richmond’s 20 most-collision-prone intersections, pedestrian safety and traffic calming.

The Richmond Active Transportation Committee – which encompasses cycling, skateboarding, inline skating and scooters – has proposed some initiatives for 2020 including bike lane upgrades on Odlin Street, Garden City and Steveston Highway as well as intersection improvements at No. 3 and Lucas roads.

With the Iona Island Wastewater Treatment Plant scheduled for a rebuild, city staff is recommending that Metro Vancouver not just build a secondary treatment plant to replace the primary one that that exists, but up this to a tertiary plant plan. A tertiary plant would further reduce contaminants in wastewater, for example, metals, nitrogen and organic matter.

The committee will also discuss the best governance structure for flood protection.

The committee meeting is scheduled for 4 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 21.
