Each year, the Richmond Christmas Fund helps low-income families celebrate the holidays.

Nearly 2,400 residents — more than any previous year — were provided with grocery vouchers, toys, books and gift cards last year, according to Richmond Cares, Richmond Gives (RCRG), which operates the program.

“We’re prepared for a similar number (of people) this year, but we do expect long lineups” said Ed Gavsie, president and CEO of RCRG.

The 2019 fund will run over four consecutive Saturdays, beginning Nov. 23. The fund will wrap up Dec. 14.

Registration for the fund will be held at the Richmond Caring Place, located at 7000 Minoru Blvd.

The fund will be open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on each registration day, but RCRG is encouraging residents to arrive before 11 a.m. If the program is too busy, late arrivals may be asked to return another day.

According to RCRG, the first day is always the busiest, with lower wait times on the second, third and fourth registration days.

One person can register on behalf of an entire family, but must bring picture ID, CareCards for all family members who will be registered with the fund, proof of Richmond residency and proof of enrollment in an approved government assistance program.

Those who come without the proper documentation will be turned away, according to RCRG.

“These checks and balances are necessary, because the Christmas Fund is supported by donations from the community,” said Gavsie. “It’s important that we direct our resources towards those in greatest need.”

Once residents have registered, they will receive one grocery voucher per family member (up to a maximum of four per household) while daily supplies last.

Families with children 11 and under will also be able to select gifts from the Christmas Fund Toy Room.
