The Richmond BC Pickleball Association is encouraging locals to come on out and share their love of the sport – after the city opened up nine new courts.

The association said the new courts – at South Arm and Hugh Boyd – are so popular that players are even streaming over the city boundaries to join in the fun at the floodlit facilities.

More than a year ago, the association approached the city requesting dedicated outdoor pickleball courts to accommodate the growing number of players.

Several months later, the city approved funding for the courts, which opened this summer to the public.

“Richmond is very fortunate to have night lights on all courts, allowing for play in the evenings as well as throughout the winter months,” said a spokesperson for the association.

“The courts check all the right boxes including wheelchair accessible.  Pickleball is one of the few sports where wheelchair players can compete against other wheelchair players and ambulatory players.  Job well done, Richmond.”

The association said it’s “very thankful” to the city and all contractors and hopes to continue working with the city to “secure more courts for this fast-growing sport, as well as dedicated play times to improve play for all level of players.”

They are welcoming people to join their group by going online to Richmondbcpickleball.org.
