ICBC data shows which Richmond roads are most prone to accidents

Car crashes and gridlock are a daily headache for commuters, but, according to ICBC, some Richmond roads and intersections are especially prone to accidents.

The latest data from ICBC shows there were 10 locations in Richmond with 100 or more crashes in 2017.

At the top of the list — perhaps not surprisingly — is the Knight Street Bridge, where 338 crashes occurred in 2017. Of this total, 165 resulted in casualties (either personal injury or fatality).

The rest of the crashes resulted in personal property damage with no injury or fatality.

After the bridge, No. 5 Road and Steveston Highway saw 160 crashes, 39 of which had casualties.

There were 148 accidents on Alderbridge Way at Highway 91 and Shell Road. Fifty-nine of these had casualties.

Two of the other major routes out of Richmond, the George Massey Tunnel and Oak Street Bridge, had 142 and 128 crashes, respectively. In both of these locations, about 36 per cent of the crashes involved casualties.

The intersection at Garden City Road and Westminster Highway wasn’t far behind the Oak Street Bridge, with 127 crashes, 52 of which had casualties.

And just a couple blocks north, at Alderbridge Way and Garden City Road, there were 114 crashes, 42 of which involved casualties.

Bridgeport Road at the junction of the Bridgeport Road off- and on-ramps, Knight Street and the Knight Street Bridge had 111 crashes.

Both Highway 99 at Steveston Highway and No. 3 Road at Westminster Highway had 100 crashes, about thirty per cent of which resulted in either injury or fatality.
