Campaign launched to support Richmond business during COVID-19

Richmondites are being encouraged to share and embrace the “Rediscover Richmond” campaign to explore new things in the city and support local businesses which have been hit hard by the pandemic.

Rediscover Richmond is a collaborative effort presented by City of Richmond councillor Chak Au, the Richmond News and Tourism Richmond, the latter of which highlighted a list of 31 activities for the public to participate in this summer.

“Many of us have been living here for quite a long time, but there are still many places that we have never been to. For example, do you know there is a Russian grocery store in Richmond? Do you know which local restaurant used to be a courthouse? said Au at the campaign launch on Friday.

“It will be a great opportunity to get out and try some new activities if we don’t know answers to these questions. And each resident can be a spokesperson or ambassador for the city.”

Tourism Richmond conducted a tourism sentiment survey in May, which showed that 95 per cent of residents support the idea of buying locally and over 60 per cent are welcoming of visitors from other provinces to visit the city, according to Nancy Small, CEO of Tourism Richmond.

In addition, Tourism Richmond dug deep to come up with a list of 31 things for people to add to their bucket lists, such as trying a 9-hole pitch and putt at West Richmond’s course and kayaking or paddle boarding in Steveston at Imperial landing.

“Richmond has been at the forefront of the mask-wearing and implementing protocols since January this year. It’s one of the safest places to be right now,” added Small.

Another key component of the campaign is to encourage everyone to enter the “rediscover Richmond” contest, which will take place from Aug. 10 to Sep.22, said Richmond News director of sales and advertising Rob Akimow.

Participants can post fun and creative photos on Facebook and Instagram with the hashtag RediscoverRichmond. Those who do so will be automatically entered for a chance to win one of three packages offered by Tourism Richmond.

“The Richmond News is committed to keeping our community connected and informed, and Rediscover Richmond allows us to do that,” said Akimow.

“We’re interested in seeing business flourish and people moving around the city, trying new things. It makes for great experiences and lasting memories.”
