The Richmond Sunflower Festival is ready to welcome visitors for its second year – with some modifications due to COVID-19.

The festival opens this weekend to give visitors a “sneak peek” of the fields – as the sunflowers are beginning to bloom – with early-bird pricing.

Once all the flowers are in bloom, there will be more than 20 different varieties of sunflowers and Dahlias on over 8 acres of farmland.

There will be health protocols in place at the festival, and some features won’t be available this year due to the pandemic.

“The festival has been redesigned this year to be a stroll-through experience,” reads the festival’s website.

“We have eliminated wagon rides, re-located our ticket area and have created wide walking paths with many points of exit and areas to avoid other guests, with signage advising all guests to yield to the right.”

Ticket sales have moved to online only, and visitors will only be able to enter the fields in designated time slots – selected when purchasing tickets online. The recommended visiting time is approximately 1.5 hours.

There will also be increased sanitation in picnic areas, while hand sanitizing stations will be available throughout the festival area, including at each of the photo op stations.

Staff will also be sanitizing high touch areas regularly, according to the festival’s website.

While masks aren’t mandatory, the festival is encouraging visitors wear them “for the safety of themselves and others.”

The event is scheduled to open Aug. 8 at Richmond Country Farm, at 12900 Steveston Highway.

Early bird tickets, costing $8.40 ($5.25 for children under 12 years old) are valid from Aug. 8 to Aug. 14.

After Aug. 14, tickets will cost $15.75, and $5.25 for children under 12. The festival is free for children aged three and younger.
