Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat, a musical based on the biblical story of Joseph and his coat of many colours, will make its debut at the Gateway Theatre on Dec. 12.

The family-friendly play revolves around a modern Joseph and his journey from receiving his colourful coat to realizing and achieving his dreams.

Oliver Castillo, who plays Joseph, said his character is a young and charming dreamer with the “gift of understanding the meaning behind dreams.”

“He has moments of being unfiltered and a bit naïve, maybe I can relate to that sometimes, but he has good intentions and learns from his mistakes.”

Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s original musical comedy of Joseph is traditionally set in Egypt; however, the Gateway team is bringing a twist to the tale.

Barbara Tomasic, director of the play, said they “decided to set (their) Joseph in the present-day dream world of a child who, through Joseph’s story, is shown that realizing your dreams takes learning, perseverance, luck and love.”

The show is almost entirely sung apart from a few lines of dialogue and according to Castillo the music “will leave you humming and singing the songs well after the show.”

Castillo said people should watch this theatre production because everyone, especially the younger generation, should “dare to dream.”

“Even if there are different forms of having dreams, whether being a performer or writing a play, I think our show hopefully will help guide that idea.”
