Identification badges are a common item that administrative staff and teachers must have while on school property, however this was not the case in Richmond more than 25 years ago.

Local schools in Richmond did not consider identity cards for school staff until 1995 when an eight-week pilot project was released.

The aim of the project was to improve safety and security at local schools where 

The project was implemented at two local schools from March 27 to May 19 where photo ID badges were to be worn by teachers, assistants, secretaries and supervisors, while non-photo ID were worn by school visitors, teachers on call, maintenance staff, etc.

Costs for the pilot project were $2,400 for the badges and other expenses during the eight-week period.
