Kudos: Steveston Rotary helping Richmond families in need

Steveston Rotary is supplying food hampers every two weeks to 35 Richmond families in need over the summer.

This spans the gap when the school-based Feed-U-Cate 38 program is not operating, and supports the families of over 50 students from 11 Richmond schools.

Funding for the program is provided through the United Way of the Lower Mainland, as part of the federal government’s COVID-19 Emergency Community Support Fund.

Additional grants were provided by Coast Capital Savings, G&F Financial Group and the Steveston Community Society. Program partners include the Richmond School District and Save-On-Foods.

Steveston Rotary is entering its 20th year of providing a wide range of services to help the community.

This includes providing grocery hampers to low-income Richmond families at Christmas, and pancake breakfasts and Thanksgiving dinner to individuals and families in need. In May, the club made a $5,000 donation for food supply for the Feed-U-Cate 38 school program.

Steveston Rotary recently donated a SUV to the Richmond Cares Richmond Gives organization for their seniors’ support programs. It also works with youth by sponsoring the “Interact” club at McMath High School, where students learn to organize and carry-out charitable activities under the Rotary service model.

The club is raising funds to support these kinds of programs through donations at a document and paper shredding event being held on Saturday, Aug. 22, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at McMath secondary.
