EDITORIAL: Seen less in Seymour

Heather, we hardly knew ye. Of all the crazy tales of political bad behaviour circulating this election, few can match the surreal tale of Burnaby North-Seymour candidate Heather Leung, late of the Conservative Party.

Heather Leung's campaign manager says his team will not agree to a Green Party demand that they take down all signage identifying her as a Conservative.

Heather, we hardly knew ye. Of all the crazy tales of political bad behaviour circulating this election, few can match the surreal tale of Burnaby North-Seymour candidate Heather Leung, late of the Conservative Party.

Leung garnered attention for her abhorrent views on LGBTQ issues.

We’ll never know for sure if she regretted making those public comments because she refused to take media questions on the issue.

Unlike other candidates caught expressing ‘regrettable’ viewpoints, Leung has never explained her position much less apologized.

She was booted from the Conservative camp only after she became a liability to party leader Andrew Sheer’s national campaign.

It strains credibility to believe the Conservatives in the riding had no knowledge of her views or past public comments about them.

Even being charitable, those views were widely discussed for weeks before the party saw fit to dump Leung. Until that very recent juncture, the party appeared prepared to let it slide.

Small detail: it’s too late now to remove Leung’s party affiliation from the ballot.

Her campaign signs and brochures still bear the Tory brand, despite stern admonitions from party HQ to cease and desist.

We can’t help but wonder what would happen in the extremely unlikely event Leung was elected. Would the Conservatives shun or embrace her?

One thing is certain: one of the most interesting ridings in the region promises to stay that way right up to Oct. 21.
