The second annual Construction Cares, presented by Naikoon Contracting Ltd., offered many fun activities for families while raising $41,700 for the MPS II research fund at the Isaac Foundation Canada. On Sunday, June 9, the indoor fair at the Pipe Shop and Shipbuilders Square featured food, music, live auctions, interactive displays and games that included Top Shot Hockey, Xtreme Board Surfing and axe throwing. MPS II, or mucopolysaccharidosis type II, is also known as Hunter syndrome. It is a rare disorder that is passed on in families and mainly affects boys, involving the body’s inability to break down a kind of sugar that builds bones, skin, tendons, and other tissue. It is progressively debilitating and there is no cure, only treatment. The Isaac Foundation currently has three gene therapy projects for MPS II underway.
