James Paxton’s time as a New York Yankee could be over.

The 31-year-old from Ladner was transferred to the 45-day injury list prior to New York’s win over the Toronto Blue Jays on Wednesday. He was initially put on the 10-day injury list after suffering a left flexor strain during his Aug. 20 start. He experienced discomfort during a throwing session on Sept. 9 and hadn’t thrown since.

For the Delta Secondary graduate to pitch again this season, the Yankees would have to advance to the American League Championship Series where he could work out of the bullpen. The left-hander was 1-1 with a 6.64 ERA in five starts at the time of the injury.

Paxton is headed to unrestricted free agency for the first time in his career. He avoided salary arbitration back in January by agreeing to a one year deal worth $12.5 million.

In 2019, he went a career best 15-6 with a 3.82 ERA and 186 strikeouts in 150 innings pitched. He also was brilliant in his first-ever playoff win, going 8.1 innings against the Houston Astros.
