I want to thank the mayor and council and the relevant committee for the decision to include rainbow benches outside recreation centres throughout Delta.

I feel a small group of people can make a difference in Delta.

Last December I wrote to mayor and council as founder of Sher Vancouver (on behalf of the Sher Vancouver board of directors) to request the City of Delta "include some rainbow park benches in public parks" as a visible sign of diversity and inclusion in the city and to demonstrate the city supports LGBTQ people.

To my knowledge, the letter was submitted to a City of Delta committee for review and consideration.

Many local Delta organizations supported the initiative, including social planner Gillian McLeod and Delta Pride Picnic and the Ladner United Church. I am sure others who must have submitted similar requests to the city prior to Sher's request also had similar proposals.

Nonetheless on Aug. 2, a friend brought it to my attention the local newspaper published a story that rainbow benches are coming to four Delta recreation centres. I was a bit surprised it happened so fast.

Some wonderful colour is coming to the parks of Delta. I wish to thank everyone who made this happen.

Even a small step of inclusion is a big step for many people who have been marginalized, targeted and at-risk.

Let’s send a message of hope for all our residents that you are not alone and you are supported.
