Safety upgrade needed for Ladner street, says engineering director

Traffic safety improvements are normally not subject to a public consultation process.

The contract consists of the supply and installation of approximately 106 metres of a 1.3-metre high aluminum fence.

Traffic safety improvements are normally not subject to a public consultation process.

That’s what engineering director Steven Lan recently told council regarding the plan to install a median fence on Admiral Boulevard from Commodore Drive to Regatta Way.

Council agreed to award a $52,300 contract for the installation of the median fence, which the engineering department said is essential to enhance safety for pedestrians and students of Neilson Grove Elementary School.

However, one resident wrote to council when reading about the plan, complaining that they weren’t consulted.

It prompted Coun. Jeannie Kanakos to ask why a notification letter wasn’t sent out to area homeowners.

Noting the fence is aimed at stopping parents and students from jaywalking, Lan said it’s been a safety concern raised by the school PAC, principal as well as Delta police.

He said the fence along the central median will not affect traffic or the community.

Asked if other schools are being examined for such safety fences, Lan, noting each site has its own attributes, added the city’s transportation technical committee reviews all sites when school principals or PACs bring forward concerns.

He noted staff also meet with those groups and try to be proactive.
