North Delta Crime Beat: Man alerts police after receiving substantial deposit of money from unknown

The following are some of the calls the Delta police responded to in the previous week:

North Delta

Jan. 12, 9:53 a.m., 7000-block of 120th Street: Police initiated a traffic stop to confirm driver sobriety. A distinct odour of liquor was emanating from the driver. The driver failed the breathalyzer and was issued a 90-day driving prohibition along with a violation ticket.

Jan. 12, 10:28 a.m., 120th Street and 97th Avenue: Police conducted a traffic stop. The driver of the vehicle was determined to have an invalid driver’s license. The driver had noticeable signs of impairment. A breath sample was provided which resulted in a warning. The driver was served a seven-day driving prohibition and the vehicle was towed. The driver opted to walk home.

Jan. 14, 11:01 a.m., 3100-block Highway 17: Police were driving along Highway 17 in a marked 80 km/h zone. It was an extremely cold day with snow on either side of the road and icy conditions. The approximate temperature was -8 degrees. A vehicle was observed travelling at a high rate of speed, estimated at 130 km/h. A vehicle stop was initiated. The driver was charged with excessive speed and the vehicle was impounded.

Jan. 14, 5:15 p.m., 11800-block of 87th Avenue: A complainant reported receiving a phone call from an unknown male posing as a representative from Canada Revenue Agency. He advised her that she was being investigated for tax offences. She provided personal information to the scammer. The male also requested that she purchase a significant amount of gift cards. Police advised the female not to provide any personal information over the phone and to contact Equifax along with her bank to monitor her account.

Jan. 15, North Delta: In the morning hours, police were busy dealing with road closures: Nordel Way, 72nd Avenue and 84th Avenue. There were several crashes and reports of vehicles off the road and abandoned throughout the day. Plenty of stranded motorists that needed a push from others, including the police.

Jan. 15, 6:16 a.m., 72nd Avenue and Westview Drive: Police responded to numerous complaints of stalled vehicles due to the heavy snowfall. Police directed traffic for many hours, diverting vehicles and helping push vehicles eastbound up the hill. Police spent many hours on scene until the road was clear.

Jan. 15, 10:12 p.m., Highway 17 and Highway 91: A semi-truck was driving along with highway when a gust of wind paired with the poor road conditions caused the driver to lose control of the semi-truck. This resulted in the truck being jack-knifed into the ditch. As a result, the diesel and fuel tank were punctured with leakage into the ditch. There were no injuries and no further damage.

Jan. 17, 12:17 p.m., 7100-block of Brewster Drive: A complaint was made to police to report a fraud. The complainant advised that he was alerted to an e-transfer that was sent from his account, something that he did not initiate. He also received a substantial deposit of money from an unknown source. Both transactions were reported to his banking institution for further investigation. Subsequent to the fraudulent withdrawals and deposits, the complainant ran a virus scan on his computer and believes a virus was downloaded on his computer which was logging his keystrokes.

Jan. 17, 12:22 p.m., 9200-block of 116th Street: A homeowner returned home from work and noticed items in his residence had been stolen. Police attended and were informed that a window screen had been torn and entry was made through a ground level window. Police advised homeowner to secure the window in the future.
