Mural coming to Ladner Village

Ladner Village will soon have something making it “Instagramable”.

That’s according to Coun. Dylan Kruger, vice-chair of the Ladner Village Renewal Advisory Committee, who said a new mural could be on a large blank wall in the village by this summer.

The city is currently looking into adding artwork on the wall on 48th Avenue across from Stir Coffee House.

The wall on the Telus building was made visible, and an ideal canvas, last year this when the city cut down several trees on the street.

“Delta had created a mural policy which was one of the early recommendations that came from our committee and, as part of the policy, a committee was struck with members of the art community and members of the business community. There was a call for proposals. There were four qualified proposals that were eventually discussed. The committee has selected a finalist. It has to come to council for final approval, but the plan is, once council gives it the thumbs-up, that it would actually be painted and ready for the community to enjoy prior to the start of the summer before the first Ladner Village Market,” Kruger explained.

Kruger said a mural program is just one of several ideas his committee is putting forward in the hope of adding vibrancy to the village.

“It’s the short-term things like that which we can do that can have a big impact and really enhance the flavour of what Ladner Village has to offer,” he added.

The idea of making Ladner Village more of a destination by having a Ladner mural project had also been put forward by the Delta Fishing Heritage Society.
