Almost all Delta property owners have paid their Delta taxes.

According to the city, 98 per cent of the total property tax levies were collected before the penalty application date.

“I’m grateful to the thousands of people who were able to submit their property tax payments and help us continue to provide the critical services residents depend on in the midst of COVID-19,” said Mayor George Harvie in a news release.

The city says it thanks property owners who have fulfilled their tax commitments, as property taxes play a huge part in funding the everyday services that are important to Delta’s residents and businesses.

There had been uncertainty in the finance department how much of the property revenue would be collected due to COVID-19, prompting council this year to approve the temporary borrowing of up to $35 million to meet corporate cash flow requirements, if necessary, pending receipt of the 2020 tax revenues.

Council had already agreed to lower this year’s tax rate increase from the originally planned 3.5 per cent to 1.75 per cent, and later agreed to change the penalty date for unpaid property taxes.

In prior years, the city applied a five per cent penalty to outstanding property taxes after July 2 and an additional five per cent penalty after Sept. 2.

Delta also allowed the penalty portion on the Home Owner Grant to be waived, if claimed by Sept. 2.

The finance department recommended that the city establish an alternative tax scheme bylaw in which all property classes had the same effective penalty date of Oct. 1, 2020.

The penalty portion of the Home Owner Grant will be waived if claimed by Nov. 30, 2020.
