A very busy stretch of Delta is going to get ripped up for sanitary sewer improvements.

City council has given the go-ahead for a $2 million contract for sanitary sewer upgrades along 120th Street from 72nd Avenue to 75A Avenue.

The city has already spent around $300,000 on preliminary work.

Approximately 660 metres of concrete sanitary sewer main will be replaced with new, larger infrastructure.

The engineering department said in a report to council that the project is necessary to renew the aging sanitary sewer and improve capacity for planned higher density, as outlined in the current Official Community Plan.

To reduce the impact to commuter traffic along the busy corridor, all work will be carried out at night between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m. Sunday to Saturday.

At a minimum, single-lane alternating traffic will be maintained.

Engineering staff say the department will ensure commuters, nearby residents and businesses have as much information and early notification as possible through the use of changeable message boards, radio and social media prior to the works.

The contractor will be responsible for preparing a traffic management plan for Delta's review and approval.

Work is scheduled to begin this year.
