Re: Macey’s departure concerns member of hospice society, letter to the editor, Oct. 3

I am a long-time patient-facing volunteer at the Delta Hospice, a retired company CEO and a former member of the Delta Hospice Society’s board of directors. My wife spent the last 10 days of her life as a patient at the Irene Thomas Hospice some years ago. It was that sad but very positive experience that inspired me to become involved at Hospice.

I could not agree more with letter writer Gilly Heaps’ observations about Nancy Macey’s decades of hard work and dedication to bringing the Delta Hospice Society and its facilities and services to fruition. It is truly a gem in our community fulfilling multiple needs.

Hardly a shift working at the hospice goes by without a family member expressing to me their admiration and gratitude for the wonderful place it is for them and their loved one to spend his or her final days.

That has not changed under the current leadership.  There is no question our community owes Macey a huge and undisputed debt of gratitude for her entrepreneurship, her dedication and her accomplishments. Macey has earned her honourable retirement without question.

Change is always difficult for some, but I believe it to be vital for any organization. Macey can pass the baton in the full knowledge that the Delta Hospice Society is in good hands. She and the citizens of Delta need have no fear.

I have every confidence in the board of directors and so should the community. As a member of the Delta Hospice Society and a proud volunteer, I am personally invested in the success of our extraordinary hospice.

Without a shadow of doubt Macey’s jewel will continue to shine under their capable leadership.
