“What does it take to save a life and how do you become a volunteer who does?”

The Canadian Lifeboat Institution will answer that question when it holds its Lifeboat Day open house at the government dock in Ladner on Saturday, July 18 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Both the Delta Lifeboat and the Fraser Lifeboat will be alongside, however owing to the pandemic, viewing will be from the wharf only as social distancing will be observed.

Crew members will be on hand to explain their volunteer work.

The public is invited to visit and support this important community volunteer service that has a working agreement with the City of Delta to assist police, fire and ambulance when needed.

CLI lifeboats help keep mariners safe in the Fraser River estuary and heavily support commercial, First Nations, sports fishermen and other recreational boaters throughout the year.

Volunteers are given professional training in seamanship, navigation, medical, engineering, and search and rescue techniques. This is done by senior members who gained their experience through service in the coast guard, navy and the merchant navy, and are always eager to pass on their experience to new crew members.
