Tunnel lovers did you ever see the display at Ironwood 10 years ago with pros and cons for bridge/tunnel? Here's some of the highlights I remember.

For a tunnel to get the grade and depth for ships and LRT the exits/entrances would be a long way from existing east/west roads requiring acquisition of farmland and road costs not included in costs. With a bridge the exits would connect with existing roads with an extension of Steveston Highway east to connect all truck traffic to Nine Road container area and to continue to Boundary Road. With future bridge requiring minimal displacement of farmland.

Police, fire, paramedics, tow truck drivers all insist the tunnel is a nightmare for accidents for them and drivers. Also there is a concern for the amount of hazardous goods going through even though they're not allowed.

The port is not going away and the volume of trucks and dampness makes maintenance of walls/ceiling substantial. Also the cost of 24-hour lighting is a real cost.

If light rail is included, eight lanes is adequate dead ending at is now the future casino and continuing through Tilbury and out to ferries in future.

The Ironwood was unbiased just stating the facts for public input.

I don't know how anyone could favour a tunnel. The bridge is ready to go now.

Hopefully they make the right decision and not for political reasons, but at this point any crossing will be welcomed and time will judge if they get it right.
