South Delta Crime Beat: Mom initiates search party after young kids go missing

The purpose of the Crime Beat is to educate and inform the public about some of the property crime trends occurring in South Delta and other files of interest. The following are some of the calls the Delta police responded to in the previous week:

Tsawwassen:

Aug. 4, 2 p.m., 300-block of Centennial Parkway: Complainant called police to report an unsafe parking situation on Centennial Parkway. Police attended the area and noted the beach traffic was heavy and the vehicle was parked obstructing the road as it was half on the shoulder and half on the travelled roadway, creating a funnel where two-way traffic could not travel at the same time. Police issued a bylaw offence notice for parking obstructing highway.

Aug. 4, 11:24 p.m., 500-block of Allen Drive: Police received a report regarding a noisy party in the neighbourhood. Police spoke with the homeowner who advised she was hosting a party. Police requested the music be turned down and guests brought inside; the homeowner was notified of noise bylaw should police return. No additional complaints received from neighbouring residence.

Aug. 4, 9:03 a.m., 5500-block of 12th Avenue: Police observed driver travelling very slowly and pulled him over on suspicion of impairment. The driver failed both attempts at the approved screening device and was issued a 90-day driving prohibition. His vehicle was towed and impounded for 30 days. Driver elected to walk home from scene.

Aug. 5, 8:16 a.m., 300-block of Centennial Parkway: Police were dispatched to a noise complaint regarding a resident new to the area washing their vehicle with a pressure washer contrary to Delta bylaw prohibiting machinery noise on holidays. Complainant advised resident they were violating this bylaw. The resident stopped the machinery when advised that police were notified. Complainant advised no further issues or need for police attendance.

Aug. 5, 10:28 a.m., 1600-block of 53A Street: Police were dispatched to a reported theft of CCTV camera. Complainant advised police that someone ripped her home’s CCTV front door camera out of the wall.

Aug. 5, 11:21 a.m., Beach Grove Road: Police were dispatched to a reported traffic issue along Beach Grove Road. Complainant advised that due to the Sun Festival parade on 56th Street vehicles were detouring through the Beach Grove arterial streets at a high rate of speed, contrary to the posted 30 km/h signs throughout the area. Police advised that special duty members would conduct active patrols and that the issue would be raised for the 2020 parade operations plan. Complainant was appreciative of call back and acknowledgement.

Aug. 8, 1:31 p.m., 5300-block of 12th Avenue: Delta bylaw officer was conducting patrols when she observed two young children walking alone. The officer determined the children had wandered away from their home without a parent. The officer drove the children to the fire hall where police were called. DPD officers located the mother and reunited her with her children. Mom advised she was making lunch when her kids wandered off. She had initiated her own search party for the 45-minute period in which the children were missing.

Ladner

Aug. 4, 1 p.m., 5200-block of 45th Avenue: Complainant phoned police advising that he wanted a bag of pistol ammunition to be disposed of from his residence. Police attended the residence and picked up the bag of ammunition. The property will be destroyed as per the complainant’s request.

Aug. 5, 12:18 a.m., 4800-block of 44th Avenue: Complainant reported a party going on in the neighbourhood since 9 p.m. Police attended and spoke to the property representative, who apologized, agreed to keep the noise level down and advised that his friends were on their way home. The property representative was advised that further complaints can result in a bylaw fine. No further issues.

Aug. 5, 1:45 a.m., 4700-block of 48A Street: Complainant reported several males singing and shouting on the front patio of a residence. Police attended and observed a male playing the guitar and singing loudly. Police advised the male to keep the volume down and he complied. No further action required.

Aug. 7, 6100-block of 60th Avenue: Complainant called police to report a late theft of catalytic converter from his business. The vehicle was parked in the yard of the business where the catalytic converter was stolen. Vehicle was not entered and there was no damage done other than theft.

Aug. 9, 12:20 p.m., 6700-block of Highway 17: Police were conducting speed enforcement when an officer noted a vehicle travelling at 140 km/h in an 80 km/h zone. The vehicle was pulled over, and in searching the police database it was determined the driver was required to be served a three-month driving prohibition notice. That was served, and in addition the driver received a violation ticket for excessive speed and a further seven day driver’s license suspension. The driver was picked up by a friend from the scene.

Aug. 10, 11:08 p.m., 4900-block of 55B Street: Complainant called police to report a group of four young adult males playing Nicky Nicky nine doors in the neighbourhood. Complainant described the males as 18 to 20 years old. Area patrols for the males were negative; no further complaints.
