Silvers for Pan Am Games field hockey teams

Tsawwassen's Sara McManus and Mark Pearson shine, but still have work to do to qualify for Summer Olympics in Tokyo

Team Canada’s field hockey teams will have to win at a last chance qualifier this fall to get a shot at the Olympics in Tokyo next summer.

Last weekend both the women’s and men’s teams fell just short of qualifying for the Olympics dropping gold medal finals to Argentina 5-1 and 5-2 respectively at the 2019 Pan Am Games in Lima, Peru.

The women’s squad, featuring Tsawwassen’s Sara McManus finished second in their pool with wins over Cuba (10-0), Uruguay (5-0) and a 3-0 loss to Argentina.

In the quarterfinal, Canada beat Mexico 9-0 and beat USA 2-0 in a thrilling semi-final.

McManus finished the tournament with five goals.

Canada was in the Pan Am Games final for the first time since 1991.

Canada’s women have sat out the last six Olympics, last competing in 1992 when they finished seventh in Barcelona.

The fall qualifier, against a yet to be determined opponent, will see Canada play two games over one weekend with a chance to keep their Tokyo dream alive.

On the men’s side, led by Tsawwassen’s Mark Pearson, Canada dominated its pool winning 5-1 against Mexico, 4-0 against USA and 14-1 against Peru.

In the quarterfinal, Canada upended Trinidad and Tobago 5-1 and beat Chile 3-2 in the semi-final.

Pearson finished the tournament with six goals.

It was Canada’s 12th appearance in a Pan Am Games final.

The men’s team will also look to keep its Olympic dreams alive in the fall during the last chance qualifier against a yet to be determined opponent.
