The City of Delta notes the Inverholme schoolhouse is typical example of an early 20th Century western Canadian one-room schoolhouse and serves as an outstanding physical reminder of the importance of education to the pioneers who built this community.

Let’s go back in time to and check out the Inverholme schoolhouse in Ladner.

The above photo from 1910 shows the one-storey, one-room wood-framed school which was originally located on 72nd Street, about a mile south of Ladner Trunk Road.

It was built in 1909 for the Delta Municipal School Board by contractor Hector Campbell at a cost of $1,290.

It remained in operation until 1926, by which time it had been outgrown.

After Alex Paterson sold a large portion of his land to the federal government for the development of the Boundary Bay Airport, the old schoolhouse was moved north, adjacent to the Paterson farm.

That’s where the current “Inverholme” name for the structure was derived.

Having separate boys' and girls' entrances, it was moved in 1982 to Deas Island Park and restored to its original character.

“It stands as a reflection of the community’s commitment to the preservation of their heritage, and is an important facility for the interpretation of local history. It was designated as a municipal heritage site in 1983,” the City of Delta states.

The historic Burvilla house, now home to a bat colony, was also relocated to Deas Island Park, as well as a barn from Paterson Park.
