At just 20, skip Sarah Daniels leads her Delta Thistle Curling Club team into this week's BC Scotties women's curling championships in Cranbrook.

The 2020 Scotties BC Women’s Curling Championships in Cranbrook this week could become a showdown of youth versus experience.

Delta Thistle Curling Club’s Team Daniels features skip Sarah Daniels, 20, and lead Sarah Loken who also competed earlier this month at the BC Junior Championships in Victoria. Holly Horvat (second) and Kayla McMilland (third) round out the rink.

Their competition includes Team Brown from Kamloops that leads all BC rinks in the Canadian Team Ranking System for the 2019-20 season. The former Canadian Junior champions won the China Open back in December and were runners-up at the 2019 Scotties.

“It’s been a really great season we have had a lot of success so we just want to keep that going. We are really looking forward to going to provincials and we know Cranbrook will put on a good event,” said 24-year-old skip Corryn Brown.

On the experience side is defending champion Team Wark — skipped by Sarah Wark, 33, from the Abbotsford Curling Club.

Wark likes seeing the younger teams on the roster and enjoys playing against them.

“It is super exciting to see so many younger ladies coming up through juniors and sticking with it, it’s definitely made B.C.’s field stronger.” she said. “It definitely helps push the older generation to go with the way of the times in terms of fitness and new techniques and mentalities. I think we can learn equal amounts from them as they can from us really.”

Rounding out the Scotties’ entries are Team Thompson (Kamloops), Team Richards (Kelowna/Victoria), Team Pewarchuk (Victoria), Team Slattery (Vernon/Kelowna), and Team Gushulak (Royal City/Kelowna/Vancouver).

Round-robin play starts Tuesday morning. The final goes next Sunday at 10 a.m.

Coinciding with the Scotties in Cranbrook is the BC Men’s Championships. Team Cotter is the defending champion.

Among the competing rinks is Team Wenzek from Royal City that includes Town Tunnel Curling Club’s Cody Tanaka at second.
