A $5,000 donation has been made to the B.C. Cancer Foundation on behalf of the Thomas Haydon Memorial Award.
The amount reflects the proceeds of the inaugural Thomas Haydon Day back in June that saw the local lacrosse community and beyond honour the Ladner native and Delta firefighter who lost his battle with pancreatic cancer last October at the age of 36.
The day at the Ladner Leisure Centre featured an alumni game, beer garden and barbecue centered around the Delta Junior “A” Islanders regular season tilt against Burnaby.
The annual Thomas Haydon Memorial Award was also presented to Islanders assistant captain Brayden Kirk and included a $2,500 scholarship.
The donation was made specifically towards Pancreatic Neuroendocrine Carcinoma research.
Haydon played and coached lacrosse in Ladner for more than 20 years. He was the first captain of the inaugural Delta Junior “A” Islanders in 2002. He also helped the Ladner Pioneers win the President’s Cup national championship back in 2004.
The Pioneers have dedicated the 2019 season to his memory and will be competing at next week’s national tournament in Quebec.
The Thomas Haydon Memorial Award committee thank Delta Islanders president Darcy Phillips and Danielle Lacroix and Steve Napper from the City of Delta for helping make the day possible.
