South Delta Crime Beat: Dispute over hedge trimming leads to complaint

The purpose of the Crime Beat is to educate and inform the public about some of the property crime trends occurring in South Delta and other files of interest. The following are some of the calls Delta police responded to in the previous week:

Tsawwassen and TFN

*Oct. 12, 11:58 a.m., 400 block Milsom Wynd: Complainant reported that a male with an off-leash dog was at the park. She was walking when an off-leash dog ran over and jumped on her. The dog was not aggressive, but the complainant felt the owner did not have control over the dog in a leashed area. When she told the male to put the dog on leash, the male began to swear and yell, causing the complainant to feel uncomfortable and leave the area. Police advised her to follow up with Delta Bylaws should she see the dog owner, or to call police should any future confrontations occur.

*Oct. 13, 11:58 a.m., location withheld: Complainant reported her neighbour had hired landscapers, and they had cut a hedge on the complainant’s property. The complainant and the neighbor have had ongoing issues over the trimming of the hedges separating their properties. The complainant stated the hedges are located on her property and she has previously advised the neighbor not to cut them. Police spoke with the landscaper who advised that he and his partner mistakenly cut the wrong hedge which was located on the complainant’s property. The neighbor was aware of the accident and claimed he did not intentionally have the hedge cut. No offence committed.

*Oct. 14, 1:47 p.m., 5200 block of 1A Avenue: Complainant reported that someone had broken into his vehicle and stole a suitcase while it was parked in the driveway of his residence. He reported that the theft occurred sometime overnight and the suitcase had been recovered approximately three houses away, nothing was missing. The complainant told police that he accidentally left his vehicle unlocked which is how someone was able to easily gain access to it.

*Oct. 14, 6:59 p.m., 5000 block of 12th Avenue: A federal Public Health Officer reported a male had crossed into Canada to attend a meeting. The male was read the Quarantine Act and told he needed to quarantine. The male stated that he would be attending the meeting, and that he would not be wearing a mask. Police located the male (unmasked) at the meeting. He was served a violation ticket for $1,150.

Ladner

*Oct. 14, 3:54 p.m., 4600 block 51st Street: Police were notified that a young male had been caught on video surveillance dumping over the barrel of used oil from the cafeteria. The act was caught on video and showed that it occurred the day before. The barrel is stored outside and the oil spilled all over the ground requiring absorball to clean up the spill. The complainant advised that he wished to proceed by contacting the guardian and meeting with the youth to have him clean up the damage.

*Oct. 16, 9:45 a.m., location withheld: Complainant reported a break and enter at her residence that occurred at approximately 5:30 a.m. while she was home with her family sleeping. Police attended and investigation revealed that the husband left his vehicle unlocked and parked in the driveway overnight. He left his car and house keys inside the vehicle. Personal belongings valued at approximately $3,000 were stolen. Police recommended to change house locks, car keys and cancel bank cards.

*Oct. 18, 7:10 a.m., 4200 block Arthur Drive: Police were called regarding a report of shots fired in the area. Police attended the area and located a hunter far in a field. Nothing criminal. Nothing suspicious, hunting season is in affect at this point in the year.
