The professional artist from Tsawwassen has created a bird out of papier-mache, a project with an ironic twist.

Umbach says the Eurasian golden plover makes the front page of the newspaper when it arrives in Iceland sometime in the spring as its arrival heralds the coming of good weather and that better times are on their way.

She says we all need a little optimism at this time to remind us of all the good things now and in the future. That’s why she created the papier-mache plover, which is even more significant because the bird that represents optimism is made from pages of the Optimist.
