Ladner multi-media artist Ilsoo Kyung will be hosting an exhibition and sale of her work, including paintings, prints, photographs and artcards, on Saturday, Nov. 16.
The show and sale will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Ladner United Church.
“I am drawn to nature and the beauty of Ladner landscapes deeply affect the content of my art,” says Kyung. “My work also confronts troubling realities of environmental pollution that pose a threat to nature. I also address the question of my cultural identity.”
Born in Korea, Kyung was separated from her family during the Korean War when she spent a year as a prisoner at the tender age of 12.
“One of my childhood memories of the war is my family fleeing from the battles with whatever belongings we could take in a cart that was pulled by my father.”
Turning around her childhood challenges, Kyung chose nursing as her profession in Korea and then Canada, specializing in the care of newborn babies.
After retiring from nursing, she began a second career as an artist. She has often used her artwork to raise charitable funds for North Korean orphans’ programs that provide essential nutrients to children to prevent malnutrition.
