The purpose of the Crime Beat is to educate and inform the public about some of the property crime trends occurring in South Delta and other files of interest. The following are some of the calls the Delta police responded to in the previous week:
Tsawwassen
Sept. 29, 6:31 p.m., 5100-block of Canoe Pass Way: Complainant called police reporting the theft of his bicycle from outside the Walmart. Complainant stated he left his bicycle locked outside while shopping and found it stolen upon his return. The bicycle is described as a foldable, yellow Polygon Indonesia with small wheels and unknown serial number. Approximate value of bike: $300.
Sept. 30, 9:38 p.m., 5600-block of 6th Avenue: Police received multiple reports of loud machinery working in the fields. On arrival police verified a tractor was the cause of the noise and updated the complainant that agricultural equipment has an exemption to the noise bylaw. Police spoke to the farmer who stated he would be done soon but the job is taking longer than expected. The farmer apologized for the inconvenience.
Oct. 2, 9:21 a.m., 900-block of Underhill Drive: Complainant reported obscene signs had been erected on the front lawn, along with broken eggs on the driveway. The reported signs were of a derogatory nature, insulting residents. Police attended and spoke to the complainant. Police observed two small signs on the front lawn. Police encouraged complainant to consider property environmental design security precautions
Oct. 3, 4:33 p.m., 1100-block of Fairway Views Wynd: Complainant reported their vehicle had damage to the gas tank and believes someone may have tried to siphon gas. Complainant believes incident occurred sometime between Sept. 22 and Oct. 3. Unknown where incident occurred but believes that it may have occurred while parked in open carport at residence.
Oct. 5, 8:01 a.m., 1100-block of Tsatsu Shores Drive: Complainant reported her vehicle was broken into and rummaged through overnight. Front driver’s side window smashed in, and driver’s side door lock punched in. During area canvass, another resident in the area advised her vehicle was broken into as well and her boat’s keys were stolen.
Ladner
Sept. 30, 12:20 p.m., 4900-block of Highway 17A: Complainant called police to report seeing a vehicle being driven in an erratic manner. The vehicle was observed tailgating other vehicles and according to the complainant, the vehicle was also speeding. Police were able to identify the registered owner based off the licence plate. Warning letter mailed out advising of the risks and ramifications of this type of driving behaviour.
Sept. 30, 9:03 p.m., 4600-block of Clarence Taylor Crescent: Police received multiple reports of a theft that occurred from a hockey team dressing located inside the Ladner Leisure Centre. Complainant of the initial report advised the theft occurred between 7:30 and 9 p.m. while the youth hockey team was on the ice. Dressing room was left unsecured without a lock. Items stolen from dressing room were multiple sets of keys, cell phones and wallets.
Oct. 1, 9:26 a.m., 4700-block of 45th Avenue: Complainant advised police that she had begun an online relationship with a male who influenced her to provide him over $8,000 Bitcoin. Complainant realized this was a scam when an email claiming to be the Turkish Interpol asked for $100,000 in order for the male to be released from prison. Police informed the complainant that recovering the lost funds would not be possible. Complainant understood but was concerned about future problems. Police advised the complainant to cease all contact and payment with these emails, and that there would be no ramifications by ignoring these emails.
Oct. 1, 1:06 p.m., 4800-block of 48th Avenue: Complainant phoned police to report a possible impaired driver who was sitting in a vehicle drinking from a bottle. Police attended and spoke with the driver who advised he was waiting for his girlfriend when police arrived. Investigation revealed the driver was not impaired and was sent on his way. The bottle in question contained Welch’s grape juice. No offence and no charges.
Oct. 2, 11:10 p.m., 5400-block of 44th Avenue: Police received multiple noise complaints of loud thumping music and party goers in the neighbourhood. Upon arrival police could hear people in the back yard. Police spoke with a family member who said they were having celebrations for his sister’s upcoming wedding and were shutting it down for the evening. Police reminded the family of Delta bylaws and warned of bylaw ticket should police have to come back.
Oct. 4, 4:02 p.m., 5700-block of Ladner Trunk Road: Police received a report of a theft in progress from McDonald’s. A group of three youths had picked up a patio chair from the patio and walked off. Group located and identified. Youths turned chair over to police, and advised they had planned to use the chair in a prank on their friends. No public interest in charges as youths were cooperative. Chair returned to McDonald’s. Youths sent on their way.
