Intermediate level Spanish conversation meetings take place in the Tsawwassen Library every other Tuesday at 7 p.m. The next dates are Oct. 8 and 22. They are not classes and are not suitable for beginners. For more information call or text Aidan at 360-350-9155.

 

Have you recently experienced the death of a loved one? Then consider joining a safe and supportive    free group for bereaved adults to share with and listen to others in similar situations, and learn to navigate your grief process. Reading Buddies is a six-week program at Ladner Pioneer Library that pairs children in grades K-3 with high school student volunteers for 45 minutes of reading practice each week. It is a great way to improve reading skills in a safe, fun and friendly environment. Registration now underway and the program starts on Thursday, Oct. 10 from 3:45 to 4:30 p.m. Space is limited.

 

South Delta Garden Club meets on Tuesday, Oct. 15 to hear Thomas Hobbs speak on Trends in English Gardening: The Good, The Bad and The Ugly. Meeting is at 7:30 p.m. at Ladner Christian Reformed Church, 4594-54A St. All members and paying guests welcome.

Join a free adult Suicide Grief Support Group where you can share your feelings and thoughts in a safe and supportive environment, learn about coping strategies and resources, and develop community with others. Lee Chapman from the Delta police Community Watch program will talk about their innovative philosophy to a safer community and sharing ideas how to avoid being targeted by scams.

Low Vision Support Group meets at the Ladner Pioneer Library from 1 to 2:30 p.m. on the third Monday of most months. Upcoming meeting dates: Oct. 21 (ML Burke on seniors’ issues in Delta), Nov. 18 (Tactile Creativity) and Dec. 16 (social).

 

To salute World Polio Day, Rotary Club of Ladner is holding “Pumpkins for Polio” sales events on Tuesday, Oct. 22, with proceeds going entirely to the Rotary’s End Polio campaign: 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Ladner Leisure Centre and 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. at Delta Secondary where there will also be a pumpkin carving contest. The Canadian Federation of University Women South Delta meets the fourth Tuesday of the month at Benediction Lutheran Church in Tsawwassen at 7:15 p.m.  The next meeting is on Tuesday, Oct. 22. The meeting is open to the public. Guest speaker is Priye Iworima, the 2019-2020 winner of the CFUW Ecole Polytechnique Commerative Award.

 

All Saints Anglican Church in Ladner hosts a free monthly community meal at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 22.

 

The South Delta Caregivers’ Network offers a six-week education series and support group twice a year. The next series starts Wednesday, Oct. 23 and runs once a week from 1 to 3 p.m. The one-time fee of $40 includes the six sessions with coffee and refreshments as well as unlimited monthly drop-in support groups. Mental Health Resiliency Support Group offered by Canadian Mental Health Association welcomes anyone who lives with a mental illness/mental health problem such as anxiety or depression. The group provides a safe environment to share your struggles and triumphs. Peer facilitators lead the group, provide support and educate on topics that help members to cope and move forward in an encouraging way. Group meets twice a month on Thursdays in the Ladner office. Cyclists who want to ride with others for fun and fitness can meet in the Ladner Pioneer Library parking lot Tuesdays and Thursdays weather permitting. The Tsawwassen Order of Old Bastards (TOOBs) has been quietly helping many South Delta groups and individuals since 1984. The club's fundraising is done through food services at community events such as the Ladner Bandfest and the Tsawwassen Sun Festival. Royal Canadian Marine Search & Rescue Station 8 Delta is looking for men and women to join the all-volunteer group dedicated to saving lives on the waters around Delta. Then join the Centre for Supportive Care’s drop-in, free Suicide Bereavement Alumni Group. Open to all communities. No commitment to attend every month. A Modelers Club meets at McKee Seniors Recreation Centre Tuesdays from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Members build models of all scales, discuss the hobby, and share tips and secrets. Members must have a current McKee membership.

 

SPECIAL EVENTS

 

Free intergenerational program. Students and seniors can enjoy board games, new technology and more from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 4. Beach Grove Elementary Grade 6 students, their teachers and KinVillage Community Centre invite seniors in the community to participate in activities in the main hall at KinVillage. This program offers many benefits and promotes communication across generational lines.

 

Kinsmen Club of Ladner/Tsawwassen presents its Kin Crab and Corn Dinner on Saturday, Oct. 12 at Harris Barn in Ladner. Doors at 6:30 p.m., dinner at 7:30 p.m. There will be a silent auction, 50/50 draw, pumpkin carving contest and lots of Kin fellowship. The evening is in memory of Con and Marna. Tickets are $40. The Happy Wanderers are looking for singers, any age, male and female, who would like to join the group for a “singalong” of old type group for seniors four times a month for one hour. Group starts on Sept. 5 and will sing every Thursday at 2 p.m. Call Ann Baranszky at 604-940-0423.

 

Did you have fun playing in a band in high school? If so, dust off your instrument, contact Curt Jantzen, and then join us in Ladner Tuesday evenings.  The Delta Music Makers Concert Band is a fun group of adults who love to rehearse and play concerts in the community. Loades of Music daytime concert band has commenced a new season. Band rehearses Thursdays from 1 to 3 p.m. at Saviour Lutheran Church, 4737-57th St., Ladner. Registration fee is $50 per year. This year the band would like to add players to its brass section that play either trumpet or trombone.
