The public is invited to the South Delta BC Green Party Picnic at Centennial Beach on Saturday, Aug. 17 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. It’s an opportunity to meet like-minded individuals, riding association executives, deputy leader Jonina Campbell, listen to some jazz and have a fun day at the beach. A Parkinson’s support group meeting will be held on Monday, Aug. 19 from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at KinVillage in Tsawwassen. The group is for people living with Parkinson's and/or the people who care for them. For more information call Gloria at 604-948-0156.

Discover fascinating facts about Canadian animals and their habitats with Well-worn Trail on Tuesday, Aug. 20 at Ladner Pioneer Library (11 to 11:45 a.m.) and Tsawwassen Library (2 to 2:45 p.m.). Well-worn Trail storytellers Rob and Lillian use puppetry, songs and story to kindle the wonder of nature in children of all ages.

The Ladner Pioneer Library hosts Teen Night, a fun night of gaming and free pizza, on Tuesday, Aug. 20 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. There are at least 29 different board games from which to choose. Games and snacks provided by Imperial Hobbies.

 

Cubetto is a friendly wooden robot that teaches the basics of computer programming through stories and activities. On Wednesday, Aug. 21 from 3 to 4 p.m., Tsawwassen Library hosts Snake Art with Cubetto. Kids will learn how to program Cubetto to draw a snake. Program for children three to eight years but families are welcome to participate together.

 

Family Fun with the Ukulele! will be held on Thursday, Aug. 22 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Tsawwassen Library. Participants will learn about the different parts of the ukulele as well as how to hold, tune and strum. They will even learn some chords and play some songs together. Ukuleles will be provided and registration is required.

 

The summer car boot sales are held twice a month at Centennial Beach in Boundary Bay Regional Park. The next sale is Saturday, Aug. 24 from 8:30 a.m. to noon, weather permitting. Experience some thrills in the Virtual Reality Zone at the Ladner Pioneer Library on Tuesday, Aug. 27 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Put on goggles and let the real world wash away. VR is an immersive computer-generated, three-dimensional interactive environment. Each play experience will be 15 minutes long. VR is intended for those ages 10+ or taller than 48 inches.

 

Are you an adult living with cancer or serious illness and would like to relax body and mind? Then join the Centre for Supportive Care’s free Relaxation Circle where you will learn and practice relaxation techniques and experience soothing touch by volunteers, guided imagery and live music by a music therapist. Looking for meaningful volunteer work that supports a culture of caring and respect? Then consider applying to the Delta Hospice Society’s Introductory Hospice Volunteer Training Program that starts on Sept. 30. Volunteers companion/support individuals and families at home and the hospice, work at the Centre for Supportive Care’s reception and lending library, participate in support groups, offer complementary therapies and provide vigils so people don’t die alone. Restorative yoga for people living with cancer. Join a free yoga group where body, breath and mind come together in fully supported reclining yoga positions. Yoga experience is not necessary. Recently bereaved and interested in self-care practices? Join this free group to learn a variety of self-care techniques and participate in experiential guided relaxation to help address feelings of depression, exhaustion and anxiety as they relate to grief. Write a story and then learn how to bind it together into a book at the Ladner Pioneer Library. Drop by the library for Create Your Own Book on Saturdays, Sept, 7, 14 and 21, from 2 to 3 p.m. for inspiration, help getting started and time to complete your creation. Then on Wednesday, Sept. 25, from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m., learn how to bind your masterpiece together into a book. On Sept. 25, drop your completed book off at the library to be part of a display during Culture Days, Sept. 27 to 29. 

 

The Ladner Pioneer Library invites you to participate in Bad Art Day on Saturday, Sept. 28 from 3 to 4 p.m. The library will provide the wacky art material, you make the bad art. Create something truly dreadful and have a chance to win a prize. Ages 12+. Registration required.

 

Want to be creative and do something for others? Do both at Random Acts of Kindness on Tuesday, Sept. 24 from 7 to 8 p.m. at Ladner Pioneer Library. Ages 8+. Come again on Oct. 22 and Nov. 26.

 

Cyclists who want to ride with others for fun and fitness can meet in the Ladner Pioneer Library parking lot Tuesdays and Thursdays weather permitting. Delta Deas Rowing Club has published its “Learn to Row” schedule for summer 2019. All programs take place at Deas Island Regional Park in Delta. Rowing is a “sport for life” and the club offers programs for high school students as well as adults from 18 to 88 years of age. The club's fundraising is done through food services at community events such as the Ladner Bandfest and the Tsawwassen Sun Festival. Royal Canadian Marine Search & Rescue Station 8 Delta is looking for men and women to join the all-volunteer group dedicated to saving lives on the waters around Delta. Do you enjoy knitting or crochet? Would you like to get together with like-minded people to share ideas, techniques and good conversation? Knit & Stitch is offered at all three Delta libraries. It runs Mondays from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Ladner Pioneer Library, Wednesdays from 7 to 8 p.m. at Tsawwassen Library and Fridays from 2 to 4 p.m. at George Mackie Library. A Modelers Club meets at McKee Seniors Recreation Centre Tuesdays from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Members build models of all scales, discuss the hobby, and share tips and secrets. Members must have a current McKee membership.

 

SPECIAL EVENTS

 

Search and Rescue Safety Day will be held on Sunday, Aug 18 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Ladner Wharf at the foot of Elliott Street. Meet the volunteers of the Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue crews from Delta, Richmond and Surrey and tour the RCM-SAR fast response rescue vessels at the dock.

Come to Trinity Lutheran Church in Point Roberts and listen to organ music like you have never heard before. The Concert Series continues on Friday, Aug. 16 at 7 p.m.   Gifted, talented young player Alex Huneault will wow with a lively performance.

 

The eCleCtiC café will be held on Saturday, Aug. 24 from 7 to 9 p.m. at McKee Seniors Recreation Centre. As summer winds down join Howard Solverson and his guest as they present an eclectic mix of live music in a comfy coffee house setting. Members $5; non-members $7. Coffee, tea and goodies will be served.

 

Did you have fun playing in a band in high school? If so, dust off your instrument, contact Curt Jantzen, and then join us in Ladner Tuesday evenings starting Sept. 10.  The Delta Music Makers Concert Band is a fun group of adults who love to rehearse and play concerts in the community.
