The second annual Bathtub Race and Festival is set to make a splash this Sunday at Centennial Beach.
Organized by the Rotary Club of Tsawwassen, the event will celebrate summer with food, entertainment and, of course, the bathtub races from noon to 6 p.m.
“There will be face painting, a few demonstrations like yoga on the beach, a taekwondo demonstration, a Pirate Pak bathtub race and food trucks,” said Rotarian Mitch Romano.
Last year, part of the festival was held at Diefenbaker Park, the site of an outdoor movie, which is not happening this year as the club has decided to keep everything at Centennial Beach.
The racing is set to start at 4 p.m. and will feature 15 to 25 boats competing for the top prize.
The Tsawwassen race has been sanctioned and is part of the Nanaimo Bathtub Race circuit, which includes a race in Nanaimo on July 19 and Kitsilano on Aug. 10.
“One of the news stations will be capturing it live and we will have a big screen set up so people on the shore will have a great view of all the action,” Romano said. “It should be much bigger than last year and getting our event fully sanctioned with the Loyal Nanaimo Bathtub Society is huge for us. Before we had support from Nanaimo and people from the society help us out, but this certainly raises the profile for our event.”
Rotary has also teamed up with the Tsawwassen Legion for a pre-party for the bathtub races on Saturday night. Patrons can come out to the Legion to catch the Woody James Band at 8 p.m. Doors open at 7 p.m. with no cover charge.
Enjoy great food, dancing, tunes and party with the bathtub jockeys and crew as everyone gets ready for Sunday's race in Boundary Bay.
“We’re really excited. Every year we want to put a few more things into it, getting more people to attend and really just make this a family fun event for everyone in Delta,” said Romano.
