Well-worn Trail storytellers Rob and Lillian use puppetry, songs and story to kindle the wonder of nature in children of all ages.

Cubetto is a friendly wooden robot that teaches the basics of computer programming through stories and activities. On Wednesday, Aug. 21 from 3 to 4 p.m., Tsawwassen Library hosts Snake Art with Cubetto. Kids will learn how to program Cubetto to draw a snake. Program for children three to eight years but families are welcome to participate together.

 

All Saints Anglican Church in Ladner hosts a free monthly community meal at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 27.

 

Experience some thrills in the Virtual Reality Zone at the Ladner Pioneer Library on Tuesday, Aug. 27 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Put on goggles and let the real world wash away. VR is an immersive computer-generated, three-dimensional interactive environment. Each play experience will be 15 minutes long. VR is intended for those ages 10+ or taller than 48 inches.

 

Looking for meaningful volunteerwork that supports a culture of caring and respect? Then consider applying to the Delta Hospice Society’s Introductory Hospice Volunteer Training Program that starts on Sept. 30. Volunteers companion/support individuals and families at home and the hospice, work at the Centre for Supportive Care’s reception and lending library, participate in support groups, offer complementary therapies and provide vigils so people don’t die alone. Restorative yoga for peopleliving with cancer. Join a free yoga group where body, breath and mind come together in fully supported reclining yoga positions. Yoga experience is not necessary. Delta Deas Rowing Club has published its “Learn to Row” schedule for summer 2019. All programs take place at Deas Island Regional Park in Delta. Rowing is a “sport for life” and the club offers programs for high school students as well as adults from 18 to 88 years of age. Royal Canadian Marine Search & Rescue Station 8 Delta is looking for men and women to join the all-volunteer group dedicated to saving lives on the waters around Delta. Delta Hospice Society offers a Drop-In Relaxation Circle, led by a music therapist, for those living with cancer or serious illness, as well as their family members and friends, every Tuesday from 10:30 a.m. to noon at the Centre for Supportive Care, 4631 Clarence Taylor Cres., Ladner. Program is complimentary.

McKee Seniors Recreation Centre needs new members for its carpet bowling club that meets Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to noon. Cost is only 50 cents.

 

A Modelers Club meets at McKee Seniors Recreation Centre Tuesdays from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Members build models of all scales, discuss the hobby, and share tips and secrets. Members must have a current McKee membership.

 

SPECIAL EVENTS

 

Calling all Dachshunds to attend the Western Dachshund Club’s 29th annual Wiener Walk & Picnic on Sunday, Aug. 11. The event runs from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Winskill Park (registration starts at 10:30). Entry fee is $10 for a first dog and $5 for each additional dog. There will be a number of events, including a Weiner Walk, costume contest and musical hula hoops, while owners can enjoy information tables, auction, 50/50 draw and refreshments.

 

ARTS

 

Timeless, a new art show, launches Aug. 1 at Gallery 1710 next to the South Delta Recreation Centre on 56th Street in Tsawwassen. An unusual title which will catch the eye and be revealed to those lucky enough to go to the gallery.

 

Did you have fun playing in a band in high school? If so, dust off your instrument, contact Curt Jantzen, and then join us in Ladner Tuesday evenings starting Sept. 10.  The Delta Music Makers Concert Band is a fun group of adults who love to rehearse and play concerts in the community. If you love music and have a brass, woodwind or percussion instrument, then join Loades of Music Concert Band. Share the joy of making music with other adult musicians.
