SFU lights the lamp in one-sided win over UVic

Simon Fraser University's Daniel Rubin moves up with the play during last Saturday's 7-0 win over UVic. The Clan picked up its first win in four games, and now could leapfrog into second place if they can complete a sweep over Vancouver Island University, Saturday and Sunday at Bill Copeland Arena.

Patrick Zubick wasn’t too busy but what he saw, he stopped.

The netminder picked up the shutout, backstopping his Simon Fraser University men’s hockey team to a 7-0 drubbing of the visiting UVic Vikes at the Bill Copeland Arena.

“It always feels good not getting scored on, but the boys really put together a full 60-minute effort and made it beautiful to play out there — I’m seeing everything, the boys made it easy on me tonight,” said Zubick.

It was his first shutout of the season.

SFU got on the board early, taking the lead 1:17 into the first period on Cole Plotnikoff’s first goal of the season. With four minutes to play in the frame, Trevor Ayre capitalized on a UVic giveaway to make it 2-0. Before the buzzer sounded, McKullen Astill went end-to-end and put up the team’s third goal of the period.

Zubick’s biggest test of the game was a penalty shot awarded to David Stickney in the second period, which he turned aside. Mitch Ledyard followed that by scoring twice in the second to make it 5-0.

Rounding out the offence were Mac Colasimone and Ayre, with his second of the contest.

SFU outshot UVic 38-20. 10 different players got on the scoresheet with a point.

“All year we haven’t really been able to put together a full 60, and today we played hard, we played a full 60, played some good defence and good defence turns into good offence,” said Ledyard. “That’s ideally how we’ll play all year.”

“We’ve got to put that effort level in every shift from every guy, and then everything will roll together. The effort level’s first and then everything falls in after that,” said Zubick.

With the win, SFU gets back in the win column after losing three of their last four games. They also move into a tie for third place with Selkirk College with a 4-3-1 record.

This coming weekend will see back-to-back home games at Bill Copeland versus the Vancouver Island University Mariners, who sit in second place, one-point ahead of SFU but with two more games played. The action starts 7 p.m. on Friday, and 3 p.m. on Saturday.
