I am a resident of Burnaby for over 17 years and I am a senior citizen living on a fixed pension income.
I am writing to ask out loud why my property taxes, as well as those of other residents in my area, went up by 158.47 per cent from last year? At the same time, my property value increased by only 21 per cent. I called the taxation department for the City of Burnaby and the assessment office to get an answer. Each one told me to address my question to the other, and neither answered my question.
As an employee, pensioner and resident, I have always paid my taxes, as I will continue to do, thereby paying the salaries, wages and benefits of those who raise my property taxes - this time by an obscene amount - without the decency and courtesy of answering me why such a huge increase was imposed this year on me, as well as others.
