Burnaby RCMP will be out in force tonight, getting drunk and high drivers off local streets during the official launch of the winter CounterAttack campaign.

Besides putting people’s lives in danger, drivers who venture out onto Burnaby streets impaired by alcohol or drugs could face fines ranging from $600 to $4,060.

“With so many options available for transportation, there really is no excuse to drive impaired,” Cpl. Daniela Panesar said in a press release. “Plan for a safe ride home by arranging a designated driver, car-pooling, or take a taxi or transit”

Based on a five-year average from 2013 to 2017, about 68 people are killed in impaired-driving crashes each year in the province, according to Burnaby RCMP.

From tonight (Friday, Dec. 6) through the end of December, local drivers can expect to run into more CounterAttack roadblocks, where officers will use roadside sobriety tests and specially trained drug-recognition experts to enforce the federal Cannabis Act and B.C.’s Cannabis Control and Licensing Act.

Last December, Burnaby RCMP got 33 impaired drivers off the road during the campaign.
Anyone who suspects a driver of being impaired should note the vehicle’s licence plate, description and direction of travel and call 911 immediately.
