Music lovers, be sure to note a couple of upcoming dates at Shadbolt Centre for the Arts.

On Tuesday, Oct. 29, the centre’s Studio Theatre will once again play host to the Sound Bites concert series, which offers up high-calibre musical performances along with coffee and snacks. Tickets are just $5 in advance, or $10 at the door, for each concert.

This month, you can hear from the Vancouver Women’s Ambient Music Collective, with concerts at noon and 2 p.m.

The collective was created at the Belvedere Court apartment building in response to the Vancouver housing crisis and as part of the activism against evictions in the Belvedere, which has been home to many artists and musicians over the years. A write-up about the show notes that, in the spring of 2018, residents and friends began meeting twice a month at the Belvedere to create ambient music as a fun and healing community activity.

The collective is working to remedy the gender imbalance in music by providing an environment where women feel at east within a male-dominated practice. Although it identifies itself as a women’s collective, all people who identify as allies of women are invited to take part.

Just a few days later, the Studio Theatre will host a concert by Don Amero, an award-winning singer-songwriter from Winnipeg. He’s onstage Saturday, Nov. 2 at 8 p.m.

He has seven albums to his credit and has been touring across Canada for more than a decade, earning himself a Juno nomination in 2013 and two more in 2016.

“This three-time Juno nominee genuinely connects with his audiences with his easy and effortless charm,” says a write-up about the show. “Don impresses wherever he goes with his messages of encouragement, positivity and beauty.”

Tickets for Amero’s concert at $36 regular, or $15 for youth (18 and under).
