Book lovers in Burnaby, be sure to sign up for the next book discussion night at the Tommy Douglas library branch.

The Burnaby Public Library is hosting its next book discussion on Tuesday, Nov. 19 from 7 to 8 p.m. A librarian will lead a talk about Medicine Walk, by Ojibwa author Richard Wagamese.

Wagamese, who died in 2017, was a Canadian journalist and author best known for his 2012 novel Indian Horse, which competed in the 2013 edition of Canada Reads. It was also turned into a feature film that premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2017.

Medicine Walk, from 2014, won the 2015 Banff Mountain Book Festival Grand Award. It tells the story of 16-year-old Franklin Starlight, who is called to visit with his dying father, Eldon – a man with whom he has only a fleeting relationship.

“What ensues is a journey through the rugged and beautiful backcountry, and a journey into the past, as the two men push forward to Eldon’s end,” says a write-up from the publisher, Penguin Random House. “Medicine Walk reveals the ultimate goodness of its characters and offers a deeply moving and redemptive conclusion.”

Registration for the program opened on Oct. 15, and anyone wanting to take part must sign up ahead. You can register in person at the library branch (7311 Kingsway) or by calling 604-522-3971. Then you can take your library card in to pick up a copy of the book, which you are asked to read in advance of the discussion night.
