Competing with Burnaby’s biggest mall – Metropolis at Metrotown – isn’t easy, by one local shopping centre is trying to do just that.

That means adding more than just shopping and eating options.

The Amazing Brentwood is doing that by adding global workspace giant WeWork to the fold.

“WeWork’s shared workspace spans three expertly designed floors within the complex, and features lounges for informal meetups, conference rooms for creative brainstorms, and private offices primed for productivity,” the company says.

“Commuting is a breeze with the city’s SkyTrain stopping onsite at Brentwood Town Center station, and bike storage for cyclists. For a break between meetings, take advantage of the fitness center downstairs or spend a moment of meditation in the onsite wellness room. After work, treat a client to dinner at one of the many delicious eateries in the complex — Cactus Club Cafe is a local favourite — or host a networking evening in our dedicated events space.”

This news follows a WeWork unveiling right next to Metropolis at Metrotown at Station Square.

The two-floor, 56,000-sq.-ft. space opened recently in Station Square, and the company hosted members of city council and the business community for a grand opening. The Metrotown location is the sixth in Metro Vancouver.

WeWork is simultaneously a landlord and a tenant of office space – the company leases large office spaces, which it renovates into a communal office space, with smaller plots within leased out to individual professionals and companies.

The company has faced financial tumult in recent months – particularly in the three months ending in September, when it lost US$1.25 billion according to a report from the New York Times. That publication said the company was expected to lay off thousands of employees.

Burnaby Board of Trade president Paul Holden said, “When you get a global brand, such as WeWork, choosing Burnaby to be one of its major homes here in the Lower Mainland, I think it speaks to the quality of the business community and the potential that we have here in Burnaby.”
