In 2014, Dr. Darcy Murphy realized his thriving practice, Queen’s Park Dental in New Westminster, had expanded to the point where he needed a second dentist.

“Patients were having to wait two to three weeks for an appointment,” he says. “It wasn’t acceptable.”

After an exhaustive search, Dr. Murphy and his team at Queen’s Park Dental welcomed Dr. Karen Liang to the practice.

“Karen was one of several candidates to apply,” Dr. Murphy recounts. “She was highly qualified and had the necessary experience, but it was her fantastic personality that was the biggest thing for us.”

Dr. Liang’s qualifications include a Bachelor’s Degree in Science from UBC and a Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) from Boston’s School of Dental Medicine, where she graduated Summa Cum Laude, an honour only achieved by the top seven percent of students participating in the program.

Dr. Liang has since been awarded the Delta Dental Award for Excellence in Public Health.

A believer in life-long learning and professional development, Dr. Liang shares Dr. Murphy’s interest in implant dentistry.

“In addition to everything else she brings to the practice, Dr. Liang speaks Cantonese,” says Dr. Murphy. “She is also conversant in Mandarin, which is a great help with our Cantonese and Mandarin speaking patients. Another great addition is Dr. Liang’s dental assistant, Marina, who is fluent in Russian.”

Like her colleagues at Queen’s Park Dental, Dr. Liang enjoys guiding patients through the planning and treatment process.

“Patients love her,” Dr. Murphy says. “They have no hesitation coming back to see her again and again.”

And that includes Dr. Murphy himself.

“She is my dentist too,” he laughs. “If I need dental work or professional preventative care, she’s the one I go to.”

Dr. Liang is a member of a number of professional associations and clubs and actively continues to expand her knowledge of dentistry and dental implants. She is a member of the Canadian Dental Association, the Chinese Canadian Dental Society of BC, the Vancouver Invisalign®Study Club and the Comprehensive Interdisciplinary Treatment and Education in Dentistry Study Club.

Dr. Liang is currently welcoming new patients and can be contacted through the Queen’s Park Dental practice.
