The New Westminster Police Department has arrested a 46-year-old man suspected of a bank robbery in the 1000-block of Columbia Street early this month.

Police were called to the area at 9:15 a.m. on Aug. 3, and attending officers found nearby evidence and searched the area with a police dog for the suspect, who fled the scene on foot.

The 1000-block of Columbia Street runs along the Columbia Square Plaza, and the only Columbia Street bank in that complex is a TD Canada Trust.

After an “extensive search” of the area, police did not find a suspect. Investigators reviewed surveillance and interviewed witnesses, while the NWPD’s forensic identification section completed a forensic analysis.

The suspect was identified as Gordon Tremblay, who had since been taken into custody for more robberies in Vancouver. Police gained a warrant and Tremblay was charged with a robbery offence in New West.

“Our investigators work tirelessly to follow leads, review evidence, and identify suspects. Again, we see the successful outcome of an investigation because of all the hard work of our officers,” said acting Chief Constable Dave Jansen in a news release. “We’ll continue to use different techniques and skillsets to investigate crime, and keep New Westminster safe and secure.”

Tremblay remains in custody, awaiting his next court appearance on Aug. 30.
