Rainy, windy weekend in store, says Environment Canada

Heavy rains will hopefully bring in the salmon, including to Hyde Creek in Port Coquitlam where a salmon festival is taking place Saturday

Prepare to bundle up for rainy and windy weather this weekend, says Environment Canada.

The rain is returning with a vengeance, with Environment Canada issuing a special weather statement for Metro Vancouver, including the Tri-Cities.

According to the agency, heavy rain and strong winds are in store for coastal communities of B.C. this weekend.

An atmospheric river will cross B.C., delivering heavy rain and mild conditions until mid-day Sunday.

The public is encouraged to monitor potential rainfall and wind warnings from Environment and Climate Change Canada as well as potential high streamflow advisories or flood watches from the BC River Forecast Centre.

The rain is good news for salmon, which have been slowly making their way to the Coquitlam River and creeks in Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam and Port Moody, the only cities in Metro Vancouver where the smell of rotting fish from spawning salmon makes people happy.

Members of the Hyde Creek Watershed Society expressed concern that the water in the Port Coquitlam creek was low, making it difficult for salmon to return.

The rain will now be assured for the 20th anniversary salmon festival that takes place Sunday, Nov. 17 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. — under cover — at the Hyde Creek recreation centre. Visitors can also tour the Hyde Creek Watershed Society’s hatchery at 3636 Coast Meridian Rd.

The salmon festival will feature demonstrations, informative displays, dissections and nature walks, a Lions fundraising barbecue and more. More information is available at the society’s Facebook page or hydecreek.org.
