Who knew? A 50-gallon grease trap located under the concrete of the parkade at the Royal City Centre mall is used by the deli at the Save-On-Foods. It needs to be removed and replaced.

Replacing a 50-gallon grease trap is all in a night’s work.

At today’s meeting, New Westminster city council will consider an exemption to the city’s construction noise bylaw so IHM Mechanical Ltd. can remove and replace a grease trap that’s located under the parkade at Royal City Centre.

“A 50-gallon grease trap located under the concrete of the parkade at the Royal City Centre mall needs to be removed and replaced. The grease trap is used by the deli at the Save-On-Foods store in the mall,” said a report to council. “Work cannot be conducted during the day as that is when the deli is in operation and customers and businesses use the parkade ramp to access the mall.”

The work is set to take place on Monday, Nov. 2 after the parkade closes for the night. Work is scheduled begin at 9 p.m. and finish by 7 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 3.

“The work will include the use of a concrete cutting saw possibly a jackhammer,” said the staff report. “While the work will be confined to inside the parkade, the sound may resonate to the exterior of the building.”

A number of measures will be taken to minimize noise impacts on neighbours.
