A new exhibition at The Gallery at Queen’s Park invites viewers to explore self-consciousness and self-empowerment.

Vulnerability, an abstract realism drawing series by Alisha Sian, is on display at the gallery from Feb. 5 to 23. An opening reception is set for Wednesday, Feb. 5 from 6 to 8 p.m., and an artist talk is coming on Sunday, Feb. 16 from 3 to 4 p.m.

Sian, a Surrey-based visual artist, uses the series to explore “nakedness, internalized invalidation and unrelenting conflict, from both inside and outside of the self,” as a write-up about the show notes.

“Invoking feminist and cultural themes on conformity, scrutiny, self-consciousness and self-empowerment, each portrait utilized intensified contrast and experimental line work to highlight instances of lightness in heavy states of being.”

The write-up notes that Sian’s work explores the borderline between realism and abstraction, and the delicate balance of harmony and chaos, in order to convey the complex beauty of faces, bodies and experiences.

“A budding career as a mental health nurse and compassion for all living beings play a dominant role in Sian’s goal with every drawing – to find solace in the darkest of places,” it says. “She hopes that her art will encourage others to explore themselves completely and unapologetically.”

The gallery is in Centennial Lodge, Queen’s Park. It’s open Wednesdays from 1 to 8 p.m., and Thursdays through Sundays from 1 to 5 p.m.
