Open mic nights can't happen live at 100 Braid Street Studios right now - but they can happen virtually. The New West studio is kicking off a new series of virtual open mic nights starting May 8.

100 Braid Street Studios is taking its open mic night into cyberspace.

A virtual edition of the studio’s ongoing music open mic night series kicks off on Friday, May 8 from 7 to 9:30 p.m.

Performers can sign up on a first-come, first-serve basis to share their talents via Zoom with a supportive local audience.

Attendees and performers need to register ahead at Eventbrite https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/on-the-braid-stage-virtual-music-open-mic-night-tickets-104173937050.

On the night of the show, performers should sign into Zoom at 6:45 p.m. From there, once the host lets you into the event from the waiting room, send a private message to the co-host with information about you: your name, city, type of music and a one-sentence bio.

Each artist has a maximum of eight minutes to perform, and all types of musical performances are welcome.

Each night will include a different featured artist/musician to host the night; Stephanie Lam of Quayside Voices will be featured for the first event.

The studio is asking for a donation of $10 per person, or $20 per household with two or more attendees, if possible. (Those who have low or no income are also welcome to attend for free.) Money will go to support the program, including paying the staff who will set up and managing the streaming services and offering an honorarium for the host.

“Thank you for supporting us as a business, which in turn supports our resident artists and musicians,” the studio says in an event write-up.

Another virtual music open mic night is set for May 22, and a spoken word edition is scheduled for Saturday, May 23.
