RiverFest heading online this weekend

Bob's and Lolo attracted a large crowd when they performed at RiverFest 2017, and they'll be returning to this year's festival on Saturday, Sept. 21. RiverFest, which features activities for folks of all ages, is a celebration of B.C. and World River's Day.

Fraser River Discovery Centre is celebrating RiverFest – but in an entirely different way.

Stephen Bruyneel, director of external relations and development at Discovery Centre, notes that the annual festival would normally see about 10,000 people flock to the city’s waterfront for a variety of events, but that’s all changed because of COVID-19. RiverFest was set to take place on Sept. 26 and 27.

"RiverFest will be different this year, but we have worked hard to bring it back and make it safe in these difficult times,” he said. “We think families will still be able to enjoy the activities, whether they are on-site, online or on the river."

Two in-person events, which include nature workshops in Mundy Park and a Family Fun Zone at Fraser River Discovery Centre, are by registration only and were sold out through online advertising and social media.

Folks can still celebrate the 18th annual RiverFest by tuning into the Fraser River Discovery Centre YouTube channel and the RiverFest New West page on Facebook, which will feature guest speakers and performers. The tentative schedule for Saturday features Bobs & Lolo (11:30 a.m.) and Haida storyteller Kung Jaadee (between 1 and 2 p.m.)
