Century House has plenty of programs for folks aged 50 and up.

Century House’s regular programming may be on hold because of COVID-19 but its striving to help local seniors in other ways.

Along with some online offerings, such as Coffee Break with Shelly on Tuesdays, Century House is making items such as puzzles, books and colouring supplies available to local seniors. They’re available for pickup just inside the entrance of the facility at 620 Eighth St.

“We have puzzles. We are giving away puzzles,” said Shelly Schnee, program coordinator of seniors’ services at Century House. “We are giving away some bundles of pencil crayons and some colouring sheets. We have the crossword puzzle – we photocopy the Vancouver Sun crossword puzzle every day and leave that out.”

When seniors borrow items like books and puzzles, they’re normally able to return them for someone else to take – but that’s not happening because of COVID-19.

“It’s just like a free service that we offer,” Schnee said. “Unfortunately, we can only give them; we can’t take them back right now, because of COVID.”

Sitting down for a meal or a cup of coffee with friends in Connections Café is another thing that’s not happening at Century House because of COVID-19, but food service is still available. A take-out meal program is being offered Monday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

“It’s going really well. We are getting 25 customers a day,” Schnee said. “You preorder. You can phone and say, ‘I want the entrée today.’ You can drop in as well, and if she has enough you can be served. If you really want that meal for the day, you should phone it. It is takeout. You come in one door and go out another door.”

The weekly takeout meal offerings and prices are found at www.centuryhouseassociation.com (Search under Connections Café.)

The Gurdwara Sahib Sukh Sagar is also distributing free dinners on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. in Century House’s parking lot. This meal is for those who need it most – seniors, persons with disabilities and vulnerable populations.
